Memorial Day Weekend … a soapbox, then casual (25 May 2008)

By BruceWMorlan

When I first decided to only continue a casual conversation I was thinking that there was not much to say about anything else, but I have since been working on an freedom awareness issue, so I plan to talk about Freedom, the origins of Memorial Day, Victor Davis-Hansen’s three historical examples, and the like. After I run down on the subject (about 15 minutes I’d bet), we’ll see if there is anyone left to talk about the originally scheduled casual conversation, which I had presaged as …

Well, I missed last week and this weekend is a holiday, so we expect a casual turnout. We’ll just kvetch and maybe review the issues raised at LocallyGrown about rental codes and the never-ending spiral as decent folk try to deal with slobs in the presence of enabling lawyers (enabling both sides). The old metaphor applies … if you add a quart of gasoline to a barrel of wine, the wine is ruined. If you add a quart of wine to a barrel of gasoline, who cares? Same with quiet small town neighborhoods. So what’s a society to do when different cultures clash? Should the wine neighborhood quit whining when a quart of gasoline moves in? Or are we pouring gasoline on the fire by just suggesting that such intolerance might be justified? Casual conversation at the Contented Cow, at the next Politics and a Pint.

What: Politics and a Pint
